Searching the WordPress Users Forum 31

Last Reviewed: 28-Mar-14

We’d probably all agree that searching the Forum can be a frustrating task. Certainly on my wishlist for improvement.

@ElectricFeet has come up with a solution that goes a long way to finding what you need, using good old Google.

Type the following into Google Search:

inurl:xxx “[theme:customizr]” site:wordpress.org/support/topic

substituting your keyword for xxx.

It’s a real timesaver…

Thank you, thank you! This should be a Meta Tip. It’s a great time saver for the users, and of course for all the great folks behind the themesandco. I also second Avinash’s suggestion that this particular piece of advice should be moved to a much more prominent spot in the documentation (which is outstanding, by the way). Perhaps include the tip the support tab on Customizr WordPress pages as well.

There is so much information in the forum already. However, digging through it is tediously time-consuming. This little line of advanced Google search syntax helps out tremendously… Cheers!

I love this FAQ item. I used it a lot in the past. Until recently it worked beautifully. I tried today. It did not work! Google gave me an error on the double quotes and then did the search without them. But the results (sans quotes) are not what I would have expected. Has Google changed the syntax for searches without telling anyone? It wouldn’t be the first time. Dave: Please tell us what we need to do. Searching in WordPress forum is so painful and time consuming.

    Hi

I’m an author with a simple wordpress site/blog which uses a theme called ‘catchbox’. I’m looking to migrate it to a theme with more features and functionality, that doesn’t require coding knowledge. Customizr seems perfect.

The main question I have is, when I install and activate Customizr, what will happen to all my existing content on my site – homepage, blog posts, images, audio files, etc? All the tutorials and videos I read and watch about Customizr assume people are starting a new site from scratch. I’d guess quite a few people like me are migrating over from simpler themes, and might appreciate a bit of guidance on how to make the switch go easier.

Apologies if this is dumb question, I’m not a developer, and a relative novice to WordPress, so I have no idea if bits will fall off, or navigation get all screwed up, when I install and activate Customizr. If that does happen, I guess I can piece things back together as I work my way through customizing the site using the great features of your theme, but I just wanted to know upfront how much of my existing site and navigation will remain at the point of migration.

    Thanks

    Frank

Hi frank, your previous content will not be altered by the Customizr Theme as it is saved in you database.
You might want to try to switch to the theme and see how your content is displayed. This is safe.

        Hi Nicolas
Thanks for getting back to reassure me. I’ll switch to the theme, see how everything looks, then tweak it as I go along. Thanks also for developing such a user-friendly theme that allows non-developers like me to have a great looking WP site with some really cool features and functionality, without needing to learn an encyclopaedia of coding. Much obliged.
Soon as I’ve got it up and running I’ll buy your Unlimited Featured Pages plugin, so I’ve got that added functionality if I need it.
        All the best.

    Hi,
First I wan to say that I’m lovin’ Customizr. It is my first WordPress website so I’m still learning the nuances of WordPress.

I have information in widgets that live in sidebars. I would like to have the ‘site search’ include the information in these widgets. Otherwise I foresee redesigning a number of my pages. Not being able to search the sidebar widgets really limits the usefulness of them.

Can anyone suggest a search widget that will do a search like that?

    Thanks,
    Jim

Thanks for your reply Dave. It has been a while since you last helped me and I was hoping you were still in the ‘support business’.
I’ll post the request on the WordPress forum as you suggest.
Hope you are keeping warm this winter.

I believe I have come up with the answer to my searching problem where the built-in WordPress search ignores the words in widgets.
I have used FreeFind for years on our old site and have been very happy with it. Don’t know why it took me so long to try it on our new WordPress site, but I’m sure happy I did. At first blush it appears to solve two problems I have noticed:
        1. It seems to search complete pages as they appear on the website including sidebars and footers.
        2. It appears to only return pages (and not revisions) that appear on the menu. If you have a ‘test page’ it will not be searched.
More testing will tell the tale but I am very pleased with the results so far.

    hi,

I am using customizr for my website. Thank you for providing such a beautiful theme, free of cost. Such initiative really helps newbie start ups like mine. However, I am concerned about one functionality in this theme. Kindly help if possible!

I have added a child page to my site, under the “Why AS” page in my Menu. However, I am not able to see the drop-down sub-menu once I hover over it. Can you suggest the possible reasons?
    Thanks and regards.

    Hai,

    Can you please help me.
I’m just looking for a ccs to change the no result page by searching.
If I get now the no result page than I get the text off Sir Winston Churchill. I want to change the text.

Unlikely, as it would be too time-consuming to supply FAQ for all possible plugins that interact with Czr. Any specific issues, I’d suggest the Forum would be a better place to get a solution for this, with a much wider audience to help fix problems. And please include a link to your Site.
